Understanding Feeds and Syndication
RSS is a technology that allows web site publishers to make their content available through a syndicated "feed" that users can subscribe to receive. Users then view the feed with the help of an RSS reader.
Many commercial websites and blogs publish summary level content through their RSS feeds. RSS feeds are constantly updated with the latest information from the content provider's site. Using RSS, users receive the most up-to-date information delivered to them in their RSS reader.
rssWhat is with that little orange XML tag that is popping up all over the Internet appearing everywhere from Yahoo, to USNews.com to your favorite weblog? That little tag indicates the availability of an RSS/XML newsfeed. RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication" and it is a form of XML (an acronym for extensible markup language). An RSS file is basically a list of headlines or article titles or events encoded so that it can be easily used by another program called a "news aggregator" or "news reader". These programs allow users to read headlines or events from dozens or hundreds of aggregated news sites at one time.
What is Syndication?
Syndication is a simple idea -- it allows a website to say to another program on the internet "Here's my content if you want to display it in another location or context." If you think about it, right now you get in your car (browser) to visit your friends (web sites). What syndication enables is your friends (websites) to come to you (your computer).
What is RSS?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an XML-based format for distributing and aggregating Web content (such as news headlines). Using RSS, Web content providers can easily create and disseminate feeds of data that include, for example, news links, headlines, and summaries. RSS is the format that defined (and defines) syndication and has brought it into the mainstream.
What kind of content is available via syndication?
Pretty much anything you can think of is available in syndicated format. Everything from technical information to recipes to political analysis to sports information. There are millions of syndicated feeds right now.
How can I use Syndication?
Typical applications for consuming or using syndicated content include:
  • Using a program known as a News Aggregator to collect, update and display RSS feeds
  • Incorporating RSS feeds into weblogs
  • Enhancing static web sites with fresh content from syndicated fees
  • What is a News Aggregator ?
News Aggregators (i.e. news readers) are programs that will download and display RSS feeds for you. Think of them as "reading software for your computer".
